In King David's opinion and experience in his life: God is a shield to him but also to others. No other shield nor other then the God given symbols needed. He counted on that too, and spoke, prayed about it.

4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your  s h i e l d  and rampart.
