Green Olive Tree

But I am like a green olive tree
in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
forever and ever.

Psalm 52:8, King David (ESV)

The LORD once called you
'a green olive tree, beautiful with good fruit.'
Jeremiah 11:16a

... his shoots shall spread out;
his beauty shall be like the olive,
Hosea 14:6a

The Olive tree

The Olive tree is known for the freshness of its ever green leaves. The strength of its roots that can even penetrate rocks. Its longevity, for the tree lives longer than other fruit trees. And its ability to survive in an environment with salty ground water. The tree seems to produce better oil while growing in porer soil.

The Olive tree in agriculture
The tree has a wide and deep root system which ensures its survival without additional watering for some time. It can tolerate the increased salt content of underground water while growing in areas close to the sea. Because of these, an olive tree can handle severe weather conditions. This enables olive groves to be beneficial in solving desertification while providing excellent olive oil as researchers found out.

Growing and harvest
The pruning of the Olive tree is in late spring. The tree needs minimal cultivation. Its fruit matures in late autumn or through the winter further south. Olive collecting and processing needs minimal mechanical technology.

Storage of Olive oil
Olive oil is easily stored. It will not go rancid for at least a year by which time a fresh harvest will be available.

Olive oil
Olive oil is used for many different purposes. In religious rituals, for medicines, in soap-making, for skin care, to fuel oil lamps, etcetera.

The Olive Tree as a symbol for people:
Those God the Almighty Father chooses to be anointed to serve him as King David did,

1 Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke me up, like someone awakened from sleep.
2 He asked me, “What do you see?”
I answered,
“I see a solid gold lamp stand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven channels to the lamps.
3 Also there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.” ...
14 So he said, “These are the two who are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.”
Zechariah 4 (NIV)

The Olive is a symbol for:
- pureness
- peace and wisdom
- power and glory
- fertility and long life

And hope,

10 He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark. 11 When the d o v e returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked  o l i v e  leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.
Genesis 8:10-11 (NIV)
