Bethlehem: heavy rain!

Entrance to the Milk Grotto, Bethlehem

Bethlehem, the place where Rachel, Jacob's second wife, was buried alongside the road. Also where Ruth the Moabite married and lived with her second husband Boaz. It's where King David was borne and raised. And where Yeshua Messiah (Jesus Christ) was borne.

Nowadays ...

... thousands and thousands of people go each year on pilgrimage to visit what they consider to be holy sites. Rachel's tomb, the Church of the Nativity and the Milk Grotto. The later is where Joseph and his family took refuge on their flight to Egypt. Yes, it's still our visit to Jerusalem in February 2010, and we didn't have plans to go to Bethlehem. So, how did we got there?

Spring of 2002

The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem was besieged in the spring of 2002. The Israel Defense Forces occupied Bethlehem in an attempt to capture wanted Palestinian militants as part of Operation Defensive Shield. The international community was on alert and had their say about the situation.

After 39 days the siege was lifted. There were militants killed and wounded, but those who survived turned themselves in to Israel after an agreement was reached. They were exiled to Europe and the Gaza Strip in the east of Israel. At the time two Japanese tourists who entered the church premises by mistake, were rescued by journalists. There is where we were going.
